Pressure Switch
The pressure switch in a hot tub is a pressure sensor that is mounted onto the heater housing, or very close to the exit point of the heater. Its sole purpose is to shut off the heater if low pressure (low water flow) occurs. In a hot tub, pressure is an easy way to determine flow rates through the pipes, pump, and heater. Some spas also use a Flow Sensor, in addition to (or instead of) the Pressure Switch, to ensure water is flowing properly for the heater to operate safely.
If a pressure switch fails, it can lead to several problems:
-
Heater Dry Fire or Overheat Condition: The purpose of the pressure switch is to monitor water pressure inside the heater tube and ensure it is full of water and circulating properly. If it fails, it could lead to a heater dry fire or overheating condition.
-
Improper Heating: If the switch is open, the spa will not heat as it is not sensing proper water pressure in the heater tube.
-
Potential Damage: Although it rarely happens, if a hot tub heater were to run without water moving through it due to a failed pressure switch, a massive meltdown or fire could result.
Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure that the pressure switch in your hot tub is functioning correctly for safe and efficient operation.
