An ozone unit, or Ozonator, in a hot tub is a device that creates ozone gas to sanitize the water and reduce the amount of chemicals needed. It converts oxygen into ozone using either a high-energy electrical discharge or an ultraviolet light. The ozone gas is injected into the water stream, either directly or through a mixing chamber.

The Ozonator works in conjunction with the chlorine, bromine, or salt sanitizer used in the hot tub to sanitize the water, but requires fewer chemicals to be added. Ozone reduces the need for high amounts of chemical sanitizers like chlorine or bromine. It also helps to destroy bacteria, algae, and viruses.

Ozone also oxidizes things like urine, deodorant, soap, cologne, makeup, perfume, hand cream, saliva, hair spray, suntan lotion, body lotion, and more. This process helps remove all kinds of pollutants in the water (bacteria, viruses, and pathogens), improving the water quality while simultaneously reducing the amount of sanitizer that is needed to keep the tub clean.

If you ever smell a sweet smell in the air after a lightning storm, you’ve smelled ozone! That’s because when three atoms of oxygen are bound together, this creates ozone.

In summary, an Ozonator enhances the hot tub’s sanitizing system by replicating the natural oxidation process and generating ozone in a safe and regulated way. It allows chlorine and bromine to be continuously reused and oxidizes other contaminants. This creates less odor (in addition to fewer chloramines), prolongs hot tub equipment life, reduces both maintenance time and cost, and finally, naturally purifies the water in your hot tub.
